If you have Northwest Naturals in the freezer, check the bag before you do anything else. FDA’s August 28 notice names two frozen Chicken Recipe lots. It does not say that every Northwest Naturals bag is affected.
Look for the product name, size, lot, and Best By date. If all four match a listed product, stop feeding it, take a clear photo of the package, and return the unused food to the store.
The two lots in the recall
| What the bag says | Size | Lot | Best By | UPC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Northwest Naturals Frozen Chicken Recipe, cat food and protein topper for dogs | 2 lb bag | B-5 | 01/26/2028 | 087316384956 |
| Northwest Naturals Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe | 6 lb bag | B-19 | 01/25/2028 | 087316380392 |
All four details matter. A similar-looking bag is not enough to tell you that it is part of this recall.
Your next five minutes
1. Stop serving the affected food
Move a matching bag away from your pet’s regular food. There is no reason to wait for a pet to look unwell before you stop using a listed lot.
2. Take one photo before you return it
Photograph the front and back of the package, especially the lot, Best By date, and UPC. It is useful if the store asks you to identify the product later.
3. Clean the places the food touched
Wash your hands with soap and water. Clean and sanitize bowls, utensils, storage areas, and kitchen surfaces that touched the food. Keep raw pet food away from human food while you do this.
4. Return the unused food
The FDA notice says customers with either listed lot should return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.
5. Know when to call your veterinarian
The FDA says a pet that has eaten contaminated food may be unusually tired or have diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, less appetite, or abdominal pain. Those signs can come from many things, so they do not confirm the cause. If your pet ate a matching bag and seems unwell, call your veterinarian.
What about people in the home?
This is not only a pet-handling issue. FDA notes that contaminated raw pet food, food-contact surfaces, or infected animals can expose people too. Wash hands after handling the food and clean the areas it touched. If someone becomes ill after contact, they should contact a healthcare provider, especially if symptoms are severe or they are in a higher-risk group.
Do not treat this as a recall of every Northwest Naturals product
The current notice is specific: two frozen Chicken Recipe lots. It does not say that every product from the brand is recalled. Social posts and screenshots can miss a lot number or show an older notice, so use the FDA page as the final check.
What we checked
FDA published the company announcement on August 28, 2026. It lists possible Salmonella and/or Listeria monocytogenes contamination and says no illnesses had been reported when the notice was published. When we checked the FDA recall directory on September 2, 2026, the listing did not show a terminated-recall marker.
Recall information can change. Before you act on an old saved post, open the current FDA recall announcement and FDA animal-food recalls directory.
