Hotel Transylvania Movies in Order: A Four-Film Viewing Guide

Checked October 24, 2026. Original editorial guide, with source links below.

Watch the four released Hotel Transylvania films in release order:

  1. Hotel Transylvania (2012)
  2. Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015)
  3. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018)
  4. Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (2022)

Release order is also the easiest way to follow the family. Each film moves Dracula’s household forward a stage, so there’s no rearranged “chronological” order to work out, and you don’t need to fit the TV series or shorts between the films.

The four films at a glance

WatchFilmYearStarting situation
1Hotel Transylvania2012A human arrives at Dracula’s monster resort
2Hotel Transylvania 22015Dracula worries about his grandson Dennis
3Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation2018The family takes a monster cruise
4Hotel Transylvania: Transformania2022An invention transforms monsters and a human

Two titles cause most of the confusion: the third film has a different subtitle in the UK, and the fourth drops the number. Both are explained below.

1. Hotel Transylvania (2012): start at the hotel

The first film sets up Dracula’s resort, built to keep humans out, and his protective relationship with his daughter, Mavis. Sony’s official synopsis has a human visitor turn up around Mavis’s 118th birthday.

Use 2012 as the year, even if a listing shows 2013. Sony’s own August 2012 announcement gave September 28, 2012, as the US cinema opening, and the BBFC record shows UK classification that September. Genndy Tartakovsky directed.

2. Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015): the next generation

The sequel centres on Dennis, Dracula’s half-human, half-vampire grandson. Sony’s description has Dracula worried that Dennis isn’t showing vampire traits; the BBFC sums up his solution as a monster boot camp. Tartakovsky directed again, per the BBFC.

This is why the first film comes first: the second one’s premise depends on who Dennis’s parents are.

3. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018): leave the resort

The monsters go on a cruise, and Dracula gets to be a holidaymaker for once. Sony’s page introduces the ship’s captain, Ericka, and Dracula’s interest in her.

Watch out for the title. In the UK the film was released as Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation, which is the title on its BBFC record; New Zealand’s Classification Office uses Summer Vacation. Some storefronts show only “Hotel Transylvania 3”. All three labels mean the same film, so search for the other subtitle if one doesn’t turn it up.

4. Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (2022): the transformations

Sony’s film page sets it up as a reversal: Van Helsing’s invention turns Dracula and his monster friends human and turns Johnny into a monster, so Dracula and Johnny have to work together.

It premiered on Prime Video on January 14, 2022, the date given in Prime Video’s official trailer and in Cartoon Brew’s January 2022 report. Derek Drymon and Jennifer Kluska directed, with Tartakovsky writing and executive-producing, according to that report and Prime Video’s listing.

Don’t be thrown by the labels. Prime Video’s listing and the BBFC record show 2021, its production year, and some pages call it Hotel Transylvania 4: Transformania. It’s the fourth film either way.

Why not start with Transformania, or watch in another order?

You can enjoy any single film on its own; each works as a standalone family comedy. But the later films meet you with relationships already formed, so a first run in release order costs nothing and keeps the family’s changes in sequence. If a child remembers only clips, ask which situation they recall, the hotel, Dennis, the cruise or the transformations, to find the film they mean.

How long are they?

Runtimes depend on the version. UK cinema and streaming records list:

FilmRecord usedRuntime
Hotel TransylvaniaBBFC, 2012 cinema91m 21s
Hotel Transylvania 2BBFC, 2015 cinema89m 9s
Hotel Transylvania 3BBFC, 2018 cinema97m 13s
TransformaniaBBFC, 2022 Amazon streaming88m 0s

Home versions can be a few minutes shorter; the first film’s UK 2D disc record, for instance, is 87m 42s.

A two-night plan, using those specific records: films 1 and 2 on night one, 3 and 4 on night two. By those records, night one is 180m 30s of film, just over three hours, and night two is 185m 13s, about three hours and five minutes, including the recorded credits, before adding breaks. Check the time shown on your own edition before setting a finish time.

Do the TV series and shorts fit in between?

No need. The BBFC lists a Hotel Transylvania TV series, produced in 2017, with 26 episodes of about 23 minutes. Shorts exist too; Goodnight Mr. Foot appears as a bonus on a later home release of the first film. They’re extras to explore after the four features, not missing chapters.

Choosing a film for a family evening

The order answers the story question; it does not establish that every child will be comfortable with every scene. The BBFC’s first-film advice describes comic monsters alongside mild scary scenes and rude humor. Its second-film record also notes slapstick violence and brief frightening transformations. Those are more concrete things to discuss than assuming a colorful poster means no scares.

For a child who dislikes creatures suddenly changing appearance, check the selected film’s detailed content advice before pressing play. If the appeal is the familiar family and jokes, one film per evening can be a more flexible plan than committing to the double features above. That is our viewing suggestion, not an official age recommendation.

The third film’s cruise setting and the fourth film’s transformations also give you useful ways to identify a requested title. If someone remembers a ship, try the third feature; if they remember Dracula without his usual powers and Johnny becoming a monster, try Transformania. You can find the right listing without retelling the ending.

Is there a fifth film?

Not released yet. Sony Pictures Animation’s official project page lists The Haunting of Hotel Transylvania as an upcoming theatrical installment. The four films above are the complete released set.

Finding the right edition

Search with the full title and year, and try both subtitles for the third film. A listing may be a rental or purchase rather than included with a subscription, and catalogues change by country, so check your own provider before planning the evening.

For another family movie-night plan, our Studio Ghibli runtime guide compares six films by length.

Research note: Years, directors and runtimes come from the linked Sony, BBFC, New Zealand and Prime Video records. Premises are kept at the set-up level. We don’t promise where the films are streaming.
