For the continuing story that began in 1984, watch Ghostbusters (1984), Ghostbusters II (1989), Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024). The 2016 film, sold on home release as Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, is a separate reboot you can watch on its own.
If you’d rather see all five live-action films in release order, the 2016 film sits between Ghostbusters II and Afterlife. Just know that watching it third won’t set up Afterlife: the two belong to different continuities.

Two routes at a glance
| Film / year | Story route | UK cinema record |
|---|---|---|
| Ghostbusters / 1984 | Original continuity | 105m; 2011 re-release |
| Ghostbusters II / 1989 | Original continuity | 108m |
| Answer the Call / 2016 | Separate reboot | 116m |
| Afterlife / 2021 | Original continuity | 124m |
| Frozen Empire / 2024 | Original continuity | 115m |
The BBFC records below identify Ivan Reitman as director of the first two films, Paul Feig for 2016, Jason Reitman for Afterlife and Gil Kenan for Frozen Empire. The table rounds the referenced cinema durations to minutes. By those records the four main-route films add up to roughly seven and a half hours; home versions are often a few minutes shorter.

1. Ghostbusters (1984): the foundation
Sony’s official page introduces the original team, Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore, and their ghost-removal business. Start here: the firehouse, the equipment and the returning faces in later films all trace back to it.
A listing called simply Ghostbusters could mean 1984 or 2016. The year is the quickest way to tell them apart.

2. Ghostbusters II (1989): stay with the original team
Ivan Reitman directed again, and Sony’s sequel page brings back the original team for a new supernatural threat in Manhattan. Keep it straight after the first film for the full original story; it’s the most direct continuation in the series.
The 2016 branch: Ghostbusters: Answer the Call
Paul Feig’s film starts the premise over with a new team, led by Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Sony’s listing uses the Answer the Call name, and Sony’s 2016 production notes, as preserved by fan archive Spook Central, describe four new characters in a new story rather than remakes of the originals.
So you can watch it before, after or without the main four. Home editions and extended versions can have different durations; check the edition name and the runtime on your own player.

3. Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021): back to the original universe
Sony describes Afterlife as a new chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe: a mother and her two children arrive in a small town and discover their connection to the original team. That’s the bridge that matters for order. Afterlife follows the 1984 and 1989 films, not Feig’s 2016 team. Jason Reitman directed, from a script he wrote with Gil Kenan, according to the Motion Picture Association’s 2019 trailer article, which also names Ivan Reitman as producer.
4. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024): continue from Afterlife
Sony’s official synopsis brings the Spengler family from Afterlife back to the New York firehouse alongside the original Ghostbusters. Gil Kenan, co-writer of Afterlife and director of the animated Monster House, directed. Watch it straight after Afterlife.

Which route should you take?
You’ve never seen any of them. The main route: 1984, II, Afterlife, Frozen Empire. Add the 2016 film whenever you like.
You want release history. 1984, 1989, 2016, 2021, 2024, knowing 2016 is a separate take.

You want one standalone film. Either the 1984 original or the 2016 reboot works on its own.
You’re catching up just before Frozen Empire. Afterlife is the most direct preparation for its family story; if you have time, the original films give its references more weight. That’s an editorial shortcut, not a recommended first route.

Planning the original-continuity route
The four-film route is a longer project than one standard movie evening. The referenced cinema records total 452 minutes 22 seconds, or about seven hours and 32 minutes, before breaks. That calculation uses the 1984 film’s 2011 re-release record and the cited cinema versions of the other three; it is not a universal runtime for every home edition.
One practical option is two pairs: the 1984 original with II, then Afterlife with Frozen Empire. Another is one feature per evening. The first option keeps the original team together before moving to the newer family story; the second gives you more freedom over a finish time. These are editorial viewing plans rather than official double-feature releases.
Checking the content before choosing a route
The original films’ comic reputation is not a complete content guide. The 1984 BBFC record flags sexual references, while Afterlife and Frozen Empire flag moderate threat and horror alongside other content. The 2016 record describes ghost chases and crude references. Check each selected film rather than extending one rating across the franchise.
For a first family viewing, deciding whether that content suits your group comes before deciding how many films to watch in a row. The order can remain the same even when you spread the films over several evenings.
What about cartoons and games?
This guide covers the five live-action feature films through Frozen Empire. Animated series, comics and games have their own stories and continuity questions. They aren’t extra films hiding between the rows above, and we’re not ruling on where they fit.

Research note: Continuity statements rely on Sony’s own pages and production notes; directors and runtimes come from BBFC records. We don’t promise where any film is streaming, because availability varies by country and over time.
