Checked October 22, 2026. Runtimes from Studio Ghibli’s official catalog; finish times and planning examples are our own arithmetic.
If you have less than an hour and a half, The Cat Returns (about 75 minutes) and My Neighbor Totoro (about 86) are the easiest fits of these six. Princess Mononoke, at about 133 minutes, needs the most room.
Why these six
We picked two films from each of three time bands: under 90 minutes, 90 to 120, and over 120. It’s a planning shortlist, not the full catalog or a ranking.
Runtime and finish time
Finish times assume you press play at 8 p.m. and don’t pause.
| Film | Approx. min | Ends around |
|---|---|---|
| The Cat Returns | 75 | 9:15 p.m. |
| My Neighbor Totoro | 86 | 9:26 p.m. |
| Kiki’s Delivery Service | 102 | 9:42 p.m. |
| Howl’s Moving Castle | 119 | 9:59 p.m. |
| Spirited Away | 125 | 10:05 p.m. |
| Princess Mononoke | 133 | 10:13 p.m. |
Working back from a deadline
- Decide when you need to be done.
- Subtract the runtime.
- Subtract any buffer you want for pauses or interruptions during the film.
What’s left is the latest time to press play. For example, to finish Howl’s Moving Castle by 10 p.m. with a 10-minute buffer, you’d need 2 hours 9 minutes, so press play by about 7:51 p.m. Ten minutes is just an example; use whatever margin your evening needs.
These examples start at pressing play. Finish any setup before the calculated start time; the buffer here is for interruptions after playback begins.
Why “just fits” isn’t comfortable
From an 8 p.m. start, Howl’s Moving Castle ends at about 9:59 p.m. That’s technically before 10, but only by a minute, so a late start or a single pause pushes it past. With a firm deadline, a shorter film or an earlier start is the safer plan.
Starting at a different time
Shift every finish time in the table by the same amount. Pressing play at 7:30 p.m.? Everything ends 30 minutes earlier. Pressing play at 8:15? Add 15 minutes.
