Wallace & Gromit Films in Order: Shorts, Features and Where to Start

There are six main Wallace & Gromit films: four shorts and two features. Watched in release order, they take about 4 hours 41 minutes, based on five UK BBFC classification records (the first two shorts share one record). If you only want to get ready for the newest film, watch The Wrong Trousers first, because its villain returns.

The full release order

  1. A Grand Day Out (1989), short
  2. The Wrong Trousers (1993), short
  3. A Close Shave (1995), short
  4. The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), feature
  5. A Matter of Loaf and Death (2008), short
  6. Vengeance Most Fowl (2024), feature

All six appear in the official Wallace & Gromit film catalogue. Because a short comes after the first feature, the series does not simply move from short films to long ones, so look for each title by name rather than filtering for “movies”.

A Grand Day Out (1989)

The official film page sends the pair to the moon in a homemade rocket to look for cheese. Aardman dates it to 1989 and notes that it was nominated for an Academy Award. The BBFC times it together with The Wrong Trousers (see below).

The Wrong Trousers (1993)

The official page introduces Feathers McGraw, the penguin lodger who causes trouble at West Wallaby Street. The franchise’s 30th-anniversary article confirms the 1993 release and says it was the first film with the duo to win an Oscar. This is the film that matters for the newest feature.

A Close Shave (1995)

Its official page dates the premiere to December 24, 1995, and sets up a window-cleaning business, a sheep and Wallace’s knitting machine.

The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005)

Aardman’s page calls it the duo’s first feature, directed by Nick Park and Steve Box with DreamWorks Animation, and lists 85 minutes. The story centres on a humane pest-control business and a threatened giant vegetable competition. It won the Academy Award for best animated feature.

A Matter of Loaf and Death (2008)

The official page says it premiered in Australia and was shown on BBC One on Christmas Day 2008; the story begins with a bakery business.

Vengeance Most Fowl (2024)

The official film page names Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham as directors. Aardman’s June 2024 title announcement describes a “smart” gnome that seems to develop a mind of its own and confirms the return of Feathers McGraw.

Two years appear for this film because it had two release windows. Aardman’s February 2025 post says it premiered on the BBC in the UK on Christmas Day and on Netflix worldwide on January 3, which means December 25, 2024 and January 3, 2025. The same post reports two BAFTA wins.

How long it takes: verified running times

Running times differ slightly between editions. These come from five specific BBFC records; the BBFC does not time all six films individually.

  • A Grand Day Out and The Wrong Trousers (combined 2023 cinema release): 55 min 45 s
  • A Close Shave: 31 min 18 s
  • The Curse of the Were-Rabbit: 84 min 55 s
  • A Matter of Loaf and Death: 30 min 13 s
  • Vengeance Most Fowl: 78 min 51 s

Together these total 281 minutes 2 seconds, about 4 hours 41 minutes for all six films, with credits included. The first two shorts plus Vengeance Most Fowl come to 134 minutes 36 seconds, about 2 hours 15 minutes. Your streaming or disc edition may differ slightly, and any breaks add time.

Choosing your route

  • Everything in order (about 4 h 41 min): a natural break falls after A Close Shave, with the first three shorts behind you and the first feature next.
  • Strict shortcut: The Wrong Trousers, then Vengeance Most Fowl. No verified standalone running time for The Wrong Trousers was available, so this route is untimed.
  • Timed route to the newest film (about 2 h 15 min): A Grand Day Out and The Wrong Trousers, then Vengeance Most Fowl.
  • One feature only: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, a complete story.

The official catalogue also lists Cracking Contraptions, short pieces about Wallace’s inventions, and World of Invention, which it describes as a six-part series broadcast on the BBC in 2010. They are optional extras, not part of the six-film order.
