The Wild Robot Books in Order: What to Read After the Movie

Peter Brown’s Wild Robot series has three novels: The Wild Robot (2016), The Wild Robot Escapes (2018) and The Wild Robot Protects (2023). If you have seen the 2024 DreamWorks film, start with the first novel; Brown has said the movie is based only on book one. The Wild Robot on the Island (2025) is a picture book that retells the first story, not a fourth novel.

The reading order

  1. The Wild Robot, Peter Brown, 2016, illustrated middle-grade novel
  2. The Wild Robot Escapes, Peter Brown, 2018, novel (sequel)
  3. The Wild Robot Protects, Peter Brown, 2023, novel (third book)

Separate branch: The Wild Robot on the Island, Peter Brown, 2025, picture book retelling book one.

Book 1: The Wild Robot (2016)

The robot Roz wakes alone on a remote island and has to learn from its animals to survive, eventually caring for an orphaned gosling, according to Brown’s page for the book. Hachette lists it with Little, Brown Books for Young Readers for ages 8 to 12; the edition details are compared below.

Book 2: The Wild Robot Escapes (2018)

Brown’s page for Escapes calls it the sequel and dates the hardcover to March 2018 (ISBN 9780316382045). Its description takes Roz away from the island into the human-made world as she tries to get home.

Book 3: The Wild Robot Protects (2023)

Brown’s page for Protects calls it the third book of the series, published September 26, 2023 (hardcover ISBN 9780316669412). A poisonous tide threatens the island, and Roz crosses the ocean to stop it. This guide does not reveal how that journey ends.

The picture book is a separate branch

The Wild Robot on the Island went on sale June 24, 2025, runs 48 pages and is a full-colour picture-book adaptation of the first novel. Brown’s page states directly that it is not a continuation of the series. Its hardcover ISBN on that page is 9780316669467, and Hachette’s listing gives an age range of 4 to 8 and an unabridged audiobook edition.

So it suits a younger reader or a shorter read of the same beginning. Putting it after Protects as “book four” would mislead anyone looking for the next part of the story.

Original edition or movie tie-in?

On his movie page, Brown explains that the movie tie-in edition of the first novel has film artwork on the cover and eight pages of colour images from the film, and is otherwise the same as the original. He also says the film, released in September 2024, changed parts of the story while keeping the main themes and characters. DreamWorks credits Chris Sanders as writer and director.

The two editions can be told apart by their listings:

  • Original hardcover: ISBN 9780316381994, published April 5, 2016, 288 pages (Hachette).
  • Movie tie-in trade paperback: ISBN 9780316581097, published September 3, 2024, 320 pages (Hachette).

Brown describes the tie-in as the same main text with a film cover and eight colour pages of stills, despite the different page counts in the publisher’s listings.

Which format to choose

For the first novel, Hachette lists hardcover, trade paperback, the media tie-in paperback, ebook, unabridged audiobook download and audiobook CD. It also lists a Booktrack edition, an audiobook with an added music soundtrack, and a boxed set of the three novels.

  • Print: keeps Brown’s illustrations, which are part of the novels.
  • Audio: unabridged, so the full text, but without the pictures.
  • Picture book: the shorter full-colour retelling for younger readers.

Where to start

  • Saw the film, wants the books: book one, in any edition.
  • Finished book one: The Wild Robot Escapes next, not the picture book.
  • Younger reader: The Wild Robot on the Island, then book one when ready for chapters.

To borrow rather than buy, search your library’s catalogue by the exact title and author, or by the ISBN of the format you want; the same title can appear several times as different formats.
