The Hunger Games North Carolina Locations: District 12 and the Arena

The Hunger Games (2012) was filmed in North Carolina. North Carolina’s tourism office names the key ones: Henry River Mill Village as District 12, private warehouse spaces near downtown Shelby for the Reaping and the Hob, and the Knight Theater in Charlotte (VisitNC). Asheville’s tourism office adds DuPont State Recreational Forest, whose woods and waterfalls became the arena (Explore Asheville).

This guide covers the first film only, not the sequels or the prequels. It also flags a current access point: the Forest Service lists the Triple Falls stairs as closed.

Henry River Mill Village: District 12

Katniss Everdeen’s coal-mining home district was filmed in a real mill village near Hildebran, in the Hickory area. VisitNC says the village served as District 12, including the Mellark family bakery and the Everdeens’ home (VisitNC).

The village is not an abandoned ruin open to anyone. It is a privately run historic site. Its operator sells admission, runs tours and asks every visitor to accept its terms, and it presents the place’s longer history, from a cotton yarn mill to its role as District 12 (Henry River Mill Village).

Not every house here can be matched to a scene, so treat a doorway that looks familiar as part of the village rather than a confirmed film spot.

Visiting Henry River

  • Book through the operator, and check its site for current tour times.
  • Stay on the routes the operator opens, and keep out of buildings that are closed off.
  • Remember that the film’s version of the village is fiction.

DuPont State Recreational Forest: the arena

DuPont State Recreational Forest is run by the N.C. Forest Service. Asheville’s tourism office says its woods and waterfalls became the backdrop for the arena scenes, and it names two falls in particular (Explore Asheville).

Triple Falls

Explore Asheville says Triple Falls “provided some of the most iconic shots of the Games,” including the moment Katniss finds a wounded Peeta hidden among the rocks. The falls drop in three tiers over wide rock ledges in the forest.

Triple Falls is also where current access matters most. As of 1 November 2026, the Forest Service’s closures page, last updated on 27 October 2026, lists the Triple Falls stairs as closed (N.C. Forest Service).

That listing does not close the whole forest, and notices change as work is done, so check the closures page on the day you go.

Older trail guides and maps may describe steps or viewpoints that are closed now. Follow the routes that are open on the day.

Bridal Veil Falls

Explore Asheville names Bridal Veil Falls as the place where a burning Katniss splashes down into the pool below. Here the river slides over broad, gently sloping rock before it falls.

Safety at the falls

The Forest Service is clear about waterfalls: do not slide on, dive from, jump off or climb any of them (N.C. Forest Service). Katniss’s plunge was a controlled film shoot, not a route to copy. Watch from the viewpoints and stay on open, marked trails.

The same page warns that the parking lots fill early, especially in summer and on holidays. Fires, including cooking fires, are not allowed in the forest.

Shelby: the Reaping and the Hob

VisitNC states that the Reaping and the Hob were filmed in private warehouse spaces near downtown (VisitNC). That is worth stressing, because the historic courthouse on the town square is sometimes mistaken for the Reaping set. It is not. The warehouses are private property, so the town centre is a place to walk and eat, not to tour sets.

Knight Theater, Charlotte: a stage for the Capitol

VisitNC says costumed extras entered the Knight Theater for filming. The theater’s operator, Blumenthal Arts, confirms that the film was shot there, without naming the scene (Blumenthal Arts).

The Knight is a working performing arts theater uptown, and access depends on its events. To see the inside, book a show.

Planning the trip

These places are in different parts of the state: Henry River in the Hickory area, DuPont in the western mountains, and Shelby and Charlotte further east. Treat them as separate stops rather than one walking route, and check the operator, the theater or the Forest Service before each one.

What isn’t a filming location

Film-themed itineraries often mix filming places with fun extras, such as zip-line tours, whitewater centres and restaurants where cast members ate. A cast visit is not a filming location. Enjoy those stops for what they are.

Questions visitors ask

Can I copy Katniss’s scenes at the falls? No. The Forest Service forbids climbing, sliding, diving and jumping at its waterfalls. Don’t recreate film stunts, and follow the forest’s current instructions.

Is Triple Falls open? As of 1 November 2026, the Forest Service lists the Triple Falls stairs as closed. Check its closures page before you go.

Can I tour the Knight Theater? See it by attending an event there.
